Rally US Finds Its Home in Knoxville and Its Opening Note in Nashville

The World Rally Championship’s 2027 return to the United States now has a civic map. Knoxville will host the rally centre, Nashville’s Lower Broadway will stage the ceremonial start, and the gravel route will cross more than 15 counties in Tennessee and Kentucky from 26 to 29 August.

WRC Rally US announcement Official WRC calendar

The World Rally Championship’s return to the United States has acquired two addresses with very different jobs. Knoxville will welcome the teams and the travelling service park. Nashville will give the rally its first public note on Lower Broadway. Between them lies a gravel event planned across more than 15 counties in Tennessee and Kentucky, set for 26 to 29 August 2027.

That announcement moves Rally US from the calendar into the geography of a real event. A date can tell a team when to arrive. A host city tells it where to build the working centre. A ceremonial start offers fans a place to meet the crews before the roads take over. Knoxville and Nashville now divide those roles, with the stages still to be confirmed in detail.

Knoxville gives the rally a working centre

Knoxville is the operational base. The WRC Arena will be located at World’s Fair Park and the Knoxville Convention Center, combining the teams’ headquarters with a fan festival. That arrangement gives the event one public heart away from the stages. It also gives the crews a familiar centre of gravity as they move between service, reconnaissance and competition.

Rally logistics grow in layers. The service park is where technicians work to a clock. The event centre is where officials, media and teams coordinate. The fan area gives the public a way into a sport whose most dramatic moments may happen on a forest road well outside a city. By placing the Arena in a central Knoxville venue, the organisers have given each layer a shared point of contact.

The announcement does not yet name individual stages, service schedules or spectator zones. Those details will shape the practical experience of the weekend. The confirmed outline is already substantial: the rally will cover more than 15 counties across two states, with stages extending from the Appalachian Mountains to the Cumberland Plateau.

Nashville supplies the opening scene

Lower Broadway is the setting for the ceremonial start. Its role is symbolic and useful. It brings the crews, cars and championship into the centre of a city that many international visitors will recognise, then sends the event east towards the roads that will decide the result. The published programme also promises live music, driver appearances and fan events at the Knoxville Arena, with community celebrations planned in East Tennessee and Eastern Kentucky.

A rally starts long before a car leaves its first stage. The opening ceremony gives spectators a chance to see the entries close at hand. It gives the organisers a visible moment to introduce the event. It gives the championship a public welcome in the United States after a long absence. The two-city plan lets that welcome happen in Nashville while the main working base remains in Knoxville.

The distance between city centre and special stage is part of rallying’s appeal. The ceremonial setting can be bright and familiar. The competition road asks for precise notes, close teamwork and a vehicle that can absorb repeated changes in surface and direction. Rally US will bring both kinds of attention into one weekend, then carry the story through the counties connecting them.

The roads promise a broad test

The organisers describe fast gravel, technical forest sections and pronounced elevation changes. Those words point to a varied test across the Appalachian region and the Cumberland Plateau. They also set expectations without pretending the route is already complete. The stage map remains a future announcement, and individual road character will only become clear once the organisers publish the itinerary.

Fast gravel rewards a crew that can maintain commitment while reading the road at speed. Forest sections place a premium on rhythm, visibility and the pace notes shared between driver and co-driver. Changes in elevation alter how a car loads its suspension and how the driver approaches a crest or compression. The event’s confirmed ingredients suggest a rally that will reward adaptable crews across several kinds of road.

The United States has a deep domestic rally scene, and the WRC announcement presents the return as a meeting point for that community and an international championship. The ARA’s Overmountain Rally Tennessee has already given the season a Tennessee reference. Rally US now has the scale and calendar position to bring world championship teams into the same wider landscape.

A 39-year wait brings a new calendar chapter

The last WRC visit to the United States was in 1988. Rally US will become one of 15 rounds on the 2027 calendar, restoring the championship to a major market after a gap of nearly four decades. The return carries sporting weight, yet its success will also depend on the work that surrounds the stages: transport, access, local partnerships, spectator safety and a route that can be run reliably.

The WRC has described the American market as a strategic opportunity. Knoxville and Nashville give that ambition a specific public shape. The rally centre gives teams a home for four days. Lower Broadway makes the start visible to a broad audience. The stages will give the championship its sporting test, with more detailed route information still to come.

For now, the most useful picture is a line between the two cities and the landscape between them. Nashville will offer the first gathering. Knoxville will hold the working centre. Tennessee and Kentucky will supply the gravel and elevation. The WRC has announced the frame. The road book will fill it in.
