Kimi Antonelli left Madrid with his eighth victory of the 2026 Formula One season and an 81 point championship lead. The result arrived through a weekend that required three different forms of performance. He had to find speed around a new circuit, stay close enough to Lando Norris to use the first strategic opening and manage a long final stint after the race moved into his control.

The scale of the season is now visible in the numbers. Antonelli has 292 points and eight wins. Team-mate George Russell is second on 211, while Mercedes leads the constructors table. Madrid extended those margins one week after Antonelli won at Monza, giving the championship leader consecutive victories on circuits with very different demands.

Saturday placed him within one hundredth of pole

Madring gave every driver a limited reference because Formula One had never raced there. Antonelli topped final practice, then qualified second. Norris secured pole by 0.011 seconds, a margin small enough to show that the Mercedes had reached Sunday with genuine front-row pace.

That qualifying result mattered because overtaking was expected to be difficult. Antonelli began the Grand Prix beside Norris and attacked during the opening sequence. Two trips across the run-off prevented an immediate pass, and Max Verstappen briefly moved ahead before the order was corrected. Antonelli settled into second and kept the race within reach.

The strategic window had to be recognised immediately

Norris built a lead during the first stint. Antonelli stayed close enough to remain the first alternative when Lance Stroll stopped at Turn 20 and caused a Virtual Safety Car on lap 13. Mercedes called Antonelli into the pits while reduced speeds were still in force and fitted the hard tyre.

The timing created the net lead. Norris reached the pits after racing resumed and then lost further time during a seven second tyre change. Antonelli still had to complete the work. Charles Leclerc remained ahead on the road with a long first stint, Verstappen stayed close, and Antonelli reported an unusual steering feeling that the team could not identify in its data.

A long hard-tyre stint became the decisive performance

Antonelli protected the hard tyre and remained within the target pace while Leclerc delayed his stop. When Ferrari brought Leclerc in on lap 48, the Mercedes inherited the official lead. Verstappen and Norris were close enough to apply pressure, though their fight for second also gave Antonelli room to build the final margin.

The 20-year-old finished 4.351 seconds ahead of Verstappen and 5.089 seconds ahead of Norris. Mercedes recorded its 251st Formula One win as an engine manufacturer, drawing level with Ferrari on the official team count cited after the race.

Madrid adds range to Antonelli's season

The useful comparison with Monza is the route to victory. Monza rewarded straight-line efficiency, braking stability and the ability to carry speed through fast changes of direction. Madrid introduced unfamiliar corners, high track temperatures and a race shaped by tyre strategy. Antonelli and Mercedes found a winning answer in both places.

Eight wins do not make the remaining rounds automatic. The schedule now moves into a demanding sequence beginning in Baku, where walls, long straights and low-speed traction will ask another set of questions. The championship advantage gives Antonelli space, while every weekend still requires the same preparation that put him on Madrid's front row.

A championship lead built from complete weekends

Madrid showed why Antonelli leads. His qualifying lap placed him inside the critical margin. His opening attacks established pressure without ending the race. The team reacted to the Virtual Safety Car, and he managed the hard tyre after the opportunity arrived. Each part depended on the one before it.

The victory therefore sits inside a larger 2026 record. Antonelli has converted eight weekends into wins and carries 292 points towards Azerbaijan. Madrid strengthened the lead because the driver and team were ready when a narrow strategic window opened, then completed the final 44 laps without giving the race back.
